Mandarin ducks (Aix galericulata) are small, vibrant perching ducks native to East Asia (China, Japan, Korea) that are famous for the male's elaborate, colorful plumage—including orange "sails" on their back—and shy nature. They are omnivorous, nesting in tree cavities, and symbolize fidelity

Appearance & Size: Males have a red/white/orange plumage with a, orange-gold "sail" (plume) on their back, while females are more subdued with brown plumage, grey heads, and white eye markings. They are 41–49 cm in length.
Habitat & Behavior: These birds prefer wooded, shallow lakes, marshes, and ponds, often hiding under overhanging trees. They are known for perching in trees, unlike many other duck species.
Diet: They are omnivores, consuming plants, seeds, insects, snails, and small fish, depending on the season.
Breeding: They nest in tree cavities. Females lay 9–12 eggs, which hatch in about a month.
Cultural Significance: In China and Japan, they are symbols of love, fidelity, and happiness because they are believed to mate for life.
Location & Status: Native to East Asia, they have been introduced to the UK and other parts of Europe. They are currently listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN.
Unique Traits: Mandarin ducks cannot interbreed with other duck species due to their unique chromosome number.
